Traveled down a road and back again.

The Golden Girls aired from 1985 – 1992. It was a favorite among the women of my family, and I mostly watched it with my mother. She always made sure that I understood the jokes – well, the *clean* jokes. She explained who the celebrities were or gave a brief summary over whatever political issue they were debating. My mom live-annotated The Golden Girls.

It’s been thirty years, and the Girls are still relevant. We’re still arguing over immigration, healthcare, LGBTQ rights, and reproductive rights. There are many cameos that resonate with current generations: George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino (you have to squint), and Jenny Lewis to name a few, but dozens of references are lost on current viewers.

It is entirely possibly to have an enjoyable experience watching The Golden Girls and not catch every reference. But as someone with a history in Gender Studies, Communication, History, and Information Science I am called to ensure that the cultural record of The Golden Girls is preserved for future generations.

I also just want to rewatch every episode and take a bunch of screenshots.

So join me, Miss Angie Dickinson, the mayor of Palm Springs, Lyle Waggoner, Mr. Burt Reynolds, and of course, the Girls, on this adventure as we relive the Golden Years of The Golden Girls.
